Wallace Wyss
Art by Wallace A. Wyss

Wallace Alfred Wyss, though long known as an author in Ferrari circles (having contributed to Prancing Horse and Cavallino decades ago as well as having written two Ferrari books) didn't paint his first painting until 2007 when he needed to portray Shelby as he conducted a book signing in Beverly Hills. A publisher bought that first painting along with the book and that inspired Wyss to began reproducing his art, first working in watercolors and now exclusively in acrylic oils. Totally self taught, Wyss calls himself a "primitive" in the grand American tradition. Because he is so new to the art field, Wyss'has no set style as yet, with some of his Ferraris so detailed as to earn him the "super-realist" sobriquet, yet others can be described as "totally abstract." He is inspired by such stalwarts in the auto rendering field as Ken Dallison and Jay Koka. Although his main thrust is to market 22" x 30" giclees for $450, he has provided Albaco 12" x 18" (including white borders) reproductions of his work on watercolour paper to enable those new to collecting art to start their collection with something affordable that still qualifies, by virtue of the limited editions, hand signing, and quality (produced under his personal supervision) as fine art.

Alfa Stradale by Wallace A. Wyss (waw07)
Signed & numbered limited edition of 500. Approx 12" x 18" (30 x 46 cm)

If there was ever a more beautiful sports car, it would be hard to name. Only 18 of the Tipo 33 Stradales were built, these on Alfa 33 racing chassis. This was the street model which fine artist Wallace Wyss opines was better looking than the race cars. The designer was the mercurial and mysterious Franco Scaglione and the coachbilder Marazzi. It made its debut in 1967. Engine was a dry sump four cam two liter V8. Fineartist Wallace Wyss saw this car at a concours, captured it on film and painted an oil, now available in signed and numbered reproduction.

California at St Julian Winery by Wallace A. Wyss (waw20)
There is precious little in the way of official Ferrari literature on the new California but Wallace Alfred Wyss, the fine artist, saw one at a Ferrari club meet at the beautiful St. Julian Winery in Carmel and , a month later, has completed an oil painting of this exciting new model. He has provided us with the first reproductions of his original on fine heavyweight watercolour paper, each print hand-signed and hand numbered in an edition of 500. Approx 12" x 18" (30 x 46 cm)

Disegno 458 2 Print Set by Wallace A. Wyss (waw18)
Set of 2 signed & numbered limited edition of 500. Approx 12" x 18" (30 x 46 cm)

It is difficult to form an opinion on a new car without seeing it in person. But design critic Wallace Wyss, author of ten car histories, felt sufficiently confident enough in his Ferrari knowledge to make some preliminary comments on this daring new design, which will be introduced in October at the Frankfurt show. When ordered as a set, they make excellent wall decor and will build anticipation for when you finally get to see the car in person, probably not until the spring of 2010.

The 458 Italia is an all new car, their new V8-powered road car entry. It carries over many design cues from the previous model but also has some new features. Wallace Wyss, a design critic and author of two books on Ferraris, painted the image and took the time to add his design comments around the perimeter. This is the front 3/4 view.

GTC/4 by Wallace A. Wyss (waw05)
Signed & numbered limited edition of 500. Approx 12" x 18" (30 x 46 cm)

The GTC/4 was a true "gentleman's express," a refined car that cost more than the Daytona when it was new. Only less than 500 were made which makes more than twice as rare as a Daytona. It had styling by Pininfarina which hasn't dated a bit. Wallace Alfred Wyss owned one, SN14801, for three years and painted this painting in memory of it. Reproductions are available in 12" x 18" size on watercolour paper, each hand signed and numbered by the artist to an edition of 500.

It shows Dan Gurney, barefoot boy with cheek, toodling along in the Targa in a factory sponsored Cobra 289 in 1964. It was co-piloted by Jerry Grant. The painting was inspired by a almost 50-year old Ford PR release photo only available in black and white. These reproductions of the Wyss painting are each hand signed by the artist and serially numbered to a maximum of 998, which according to the Shelby American Automobile Club , is the exact number of Cobras Shelby American built in the 1960s.

Lusso by Wallace A. Wyss (waw12)
Signed & numbered limited edition of 500. Approx 12" x 18" (30 x 46 cm)

Ferrari thought the GT/L " Lusso" berlinetta, a design by Pininfarina which had a chassis very close to the 250GTO , was almost too pretty to be a Ferrari. It was said that he ordered the 275GTB designed to counteract it. Wallace Wyss saw this car at a California concours at Palos Verdes and captured it in oils. This is a reproduction of his painting on heavyweight watercolour paper.

Prototipo by Wallace A. Wyss (waw01)
Signed & numbered limited edition of 500. Approx 12" x 18" (30 x 46 cm)

Reproduction on fine watercolour paper of an original oil by Wallace Alfred Wyss, noted Ferrari author. It measures 12" x 18" including the white borders. These are eminently suitable for framing. The work shows a Ferrari prototype Wyss photographed at the Monterey Historic, probably a P3 or P3/4, one of the most sensual Ferrari race cars ever built. This print shows Wyss' "abstract" background style with ultra-realism on the car itself. These are the cars that beat the Ford GT40s at Daytona. These reproductions are each hand signed by the artist and serially numbered to a maximum of 500.

Prototype by Wallace A. Wyss (waw15)
Signed & numbered limited edition of 500. Approx 12" x 18" (30 x 46 cm)

The P3/4 was a significant race car, not only visually because it was the last of the rounded designs before Ferrari started going to more purposeful flatter surfaces in race cars but because this model trounced the Ford GTs at Daytona, blunting the Ford steamroller. It is one of the rarest Ferrari race cars and among the most valuable. Here Wallace Wyss made a painting after seeing the car at the Monterey Historic races.

Shelby's Corvette by Wallace A. Wyss (waw26)
Signed & numbered limited edition of 500. Approx 12" x 18" (30 x 46 cm)

The artist presents us a rare view of a Scaglietti bodied Corvette as conceived by Carroll Shelby. “The car is a result of a little deal that Shelby cooked up around ‘58, cadging three Corvette chassis out of Ed Cole at Chevrolet and sending them to be bodied by Scaglietti. Chevy then cut him off from any more chassis so the project died a’bornin’. The artist says he was fooled by the non-Corvette grille, which the other two of the trio have.”
